Almond and chocolate brigadeiro is Brazilian dessert that popular on kids birthdays. It’s very simple to make and less than 5 ingredients.
History of The Brazilian Brigadeiro Dessert
The story behind this food is indeed unique. It started when the early 1940s was the most difficult time to find sweets and fruit. Therefore, the female chefs in Brazil bring out their creativity in making sweet snacks. Then, they made sweet food with condensed milk as the main ingredient.
One day, they wanted to give the name of this dessert. They thought of a popular handsome brigadier that would be a politician in Brazil. They like him because he was so sweet and handsome.
Yet, the handsome brigadier was not elected as a politician. As a form of respect, the woman in the samba country named this tiny dessert brigadeiro. It is to make a reminder of the brigadier figure.
Other people said that Brigadeiro came from Eduardo Gomes whose military rank was Brigadier. He promoted himself to become a presidential candidate. Instead of selling the usual electoral merchandising, his party decided to make a candy called brigadeiro as a part of the marketing.
But finally, after many Brazilian immigrants entered various countries around the world, this Brazilian dessert has been well-known by the wider community until now.
What is Almond & Chocolate Brigadeiro?
Brigadeiro almonds and chocolates are a typical Brazilian dessert that is popular on children’s birthdays. Very easy to make and less than 5 ingredients.
Brigadeiro is a traditional dessert from Brazil. It is similar to chocolate truffles. It is so popular Brazilian dessert because of the chewy texture and very sweet taste. People who like sweet desserts will like this sweet snack.
The method of making this Brazilian dessert is unique. You have to heat sweetened condensed milk in a container with water, cocoa powder, and chocolate. The ingredients are different in every recipe.
After that, you need to stir all the ingredients in the container continuously for about 30 minutes until thick. Then, pour the dough on a plate that has been greased with butter.
After this process, of course, it will be cooled first and then made into small balls. The brigadeiro itself is more often made on children’s birthdays.
Apart from that, of course, these sweet foods can be easily found in cafes in the city of Brazil, or in small food stalls on the side of the streets.
Brazilians usually serve the brigadeiro at birthday parties. Kids really love this bite-sized sweet dessert.
Now brigadeiro has more than 50 flavors namely almond, pistachio, orange and others. For this post, I will share two recipes, namely almond brigadeiro and chocolate brigadeiro.
I was inspired to make almond brigadeiro from Dulce Delight. Several years ago when I was just starting out with cooking lessons, I decided to make this sweet dessert out of the recipe. And I was blown away because I managed to make it the first time. And the taste is really good too.
How to Make Almond and Chocolate Brigadeiro
I separated the process of Almond Brigadeiro and Chocolate Brigadeiro. The process is same, but different in some additional ingredients. Feel free to add your additional ingredients. In this recipe, you need sweetened condensed milk, sliced almonds, cocoa powder, chocolate sprinkles, and salt.
Almond Brigadeiro
Roast almonds on a pan in a low heat. Stir frequently until golden brown. Put the almonds into plastic bag then crushed it. Set aside. Place on a small bowl.
In a saucepan add butter, sweetened condensed milk, 2 tbsp crushed almonds, and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally with heat resistant rubber spatula to prevent the bottom from burning.
Cook until the mixture thickened about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.
Immediately pour into a plate or bowl. Set aside until fully cool for about 30 minutes.
Roll the almond brigadeiro into a small ball (about 1/2 tablespoon). Roll the formed balls into crushed almonds until it is completely coated. Place in the paper candy cup for servings.
Chocolate Brigadeiro
In a saucepan add butter, sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally with heat resistant rubber spatula to prevent the bottom from burning. Cook until the mixture thickened.
