Ingredients of Ham and Cheese Croissant
- Danish Pastry; You can use Danish dough or even puff pastry. Puff pastry is much lighter than croissants but still delicious. Danish is a heavier dough than Puff pastry so the croissants a similar to croissants dough. These flaky, buttery pastry sheets form the base of the croissant. They provide layers of light, airy texture, essential for the classic croissant feel.
- Smoked Beef; I use smoked beef rather than beef bacon as a substitution for the original ham because I’m looking for a halal option. Since this is a halal version, smoked beef is used as a substitute for ham, giving a savory, smoky flavor that complements the cheese.
- Cheddar Cheese; any of your favorite cheeses will work here. I think slices are less mess but you be the judge of that. You can also use mozzarella cheese, but keep an eye out when you bake them together.
- Egg; The egg will be used for egg wash, it gives each croissant a quick egg wash, avoid the side edges of the pastry (or else you will be gluing the layers together, making it difficult for them to expand and puff up. this helps give the croissant a beautiful golden-brown color when baked.
- Milk; for a creamy sauce with egg. Mixed with the egg, the milk in the egg wash helps enhance browning and gives the pastry a glossy, appealing finish. But you can also use any other sauce such as a sweet honey mustard.
How to Make Ham and Cheese Croissant
First, divide 1 sheet of Danish pastry into 3 equal parts. Next, lightly moisten the edges of each part with a little water, then press them together at the connecting edges to form one continuous piece of pastry. Repeat this process with the other sheets of Danish pastry until you have a larger, unified sheet.
Then, trim each Danish pastry sheet into triangles with a base of about 10 cm. This process should yield 2 triangles per section. Place a slice of smoked beef (or halal ham) on the wider end of each triangle, then layer it with a slice of cheddar cheese on top.
Starting from the wider end of the triangle, roll each triangle up toward the pointed end. Ensure the tip is tucked under the croissant to help it hold its shape. Arrange each rolled croissant on a baking pan, leaving space between them to allow for expansion. Let the croissants proof in a warm place for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until they have noticeably puffed up.
Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F).
Prepare the egg wash by whisking together the egg and milk. Once mixed, gently brush this wash over the surface of each croissant. This step will give the croissants a glossy, golden finish when baked.
Finally, bake the ham and cheese croissants in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful golden-brown color. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving.
Enjoy your halal ham and cheese croissant. I really love the buttery flaky and crispy croissant mix with creamy cheesy smoked beef and cheddar cheese! If you want, you can add the sauce in the center too!
