The difference between jam and compote
I know both of them are useful as toppings, and homemade blueberry compote or jam is always needed in the refrigerator! However, even tho they look the same, jam and compote have some differences. And we can see from texture, sugar content, consistency, and usage.

Both jam and compote are popular toppings, but they differ in texture, sugar content, consistency, and usage. Compote consists of cooked fruit (like blueberries) with sugar and flavorings, which breaks down during cooking but stays in larger pieces or gets lightly mashed. It uses less sugar than jam, mainly to enhance the fruit’s natural sweetness instead of preserving it. With a consistency thicker than syrup but thinner than jam, compote is spoonable and sauce-like. You’ll often find it topping pancakes, waffles, yogurt, and desserts, and it’s meant for short-term use, not long-term storage.

Jam has a smooth or slightly chunky texture, depending on how much the fruit is cooked and mashed. It’s thicker and more solid than compote, which makes it spread easily. Jam contains more sugar and often uses pectin to help it set and firm up, allowing for long-term preservation. Its spreadable consistency makes it perfect for toast, sandwiches, and pastries. Jam has a longer shelf life because you can put it in a can or jar, meanwhile compote is typically made fresh and consumed quickly.

Ingredients of Homemade Blueberry Compote

- Frozen Blueberry; You can use frozen when fresh blueberries aren’t in season—I love the bags of frozen wild blueberries. The main ingredient of this recipe, but frozen berries will work just as well. The fresh blueberry is better.
- Caster Sugar; This isn’t just for sweetness; it also makes the compote thick and jammy. Monk fruit sweetener also works great if you want to make it sugar-free.
- Lemon Juice; You need to add a small amount of liquid to help your blender work. I love blueberry + lemon together. The lemon’s tang perfectly complements the berries’ sweetness. You can use water too.
Let’s Make Homemade Blueberry Compote

First thing first, prepare the ingredients. If using frozen blueberries, there’s no need to thaw them beforehand; you can use them directly from the freezer.

Secondly, in a medium saucepan, combine the blueberries, sugar, and lemon juice.
Then, place a saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally and allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 10 minutes. As it heats up, the blueberries will release their juices and the sauce will begin to thicken.
When the compote has reached the desired consistency, remove from the heat. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. The compote will continue to thicken as it cools.

Finally, Enjoy your delicious and versatile homemade blueberry compote!
Recipe Notes
- Sweetness: The amount of sugar may be adjusted based on the sweetness of your blueberries and personal preference. your tastes may be different than mine. Start with a smaller amount and taste as you go. And remember: you can always add more.
- Consistency: If you like a chunkier compote, you can mash some of the blueberries with a spoon or potato masher while cooking, or leave them whole for a more rustic texture.
- Overcooked blueberries will become mushy and lose their bright color. Your goal should be a slightly softened texture with a few of the berries remaining whole. Your cooking time will depend on the amount of blueberries you use, and your specific stovetop!
- Storage: Store any leftover compote in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- For extra flavor or flavor variations, you can add some cinnamon to the compote or stir in vanilla extract at the end
