Mcd inspired Iconic menu Hash browns
There’s something truly satisfying about biting into a perfectly crispy, golden-brown hash brown—especially when it’s reminiscent of McDonald’s iconic version! Here, I’ve crafted a step-by-step guide to help you create your very own copycat McDonald’s hash browns from scratch.
This vegan-friendly recipe, much like the original, requires just a few simple ingredients, allowing you to savor that pure, crispy potato flavor. McDonald’s hash browns, made from shredded potatoes shaped into rectangular patties and deep-fried to a golden crisp, are a breakfast favorite across North America.
However, now McDonald’s is being boycotted because of supporting genocide in Gaza generally Palestine, so personally, I and my family wouldn’t go there again until there is an official statement from them that they no longer support it. Fortunately, I can make this at home with 90% identical to the original lol.
Not only are these hash browns incredibly tasty, but they’re also wonderfully simple to make, requiring just two main ingredients: potatoes and a touch of cornstarch. Serve these as the perfect crispy side to a warm, hearty breakfast sandwich, and elevate your breakfast game with minimal effort!
Ingredients of Homemade Hash Browns
- Potatoes; For classic hash browns, the key ingredient is potatoes, of course! For this recipe for McDonald’s hash browns, You’ll want to use low-moisture russet potatoes over waxy potatoes like Yukon golds. The latter has more water and won’t make for crispy hashbrowns. to be honest, any large potato will work! Choose starchy potatoes like russets to achieve that crispy texture.
- Salt; I keep things simple and just use salt to make delicious hash brown patties!
- Cornstarch; Corn flour helps the patties hold together and fry up nice and crispy! You can also use tapioca flour.
- Cooking oil; Any vegetable oil will work, but I typically use a high-heat oil like avocado oil is the best. Olive oil works too, but is not high-heat.
- Cheese slices (optional); I like to add the slices of cheese in the middle of my homemade hash browns. However, feel free to omit the cheese or swap the kind of cheese with everything that you love.
How to Make Homemade Hash Browns
Start by peeling the potatoes. Once peeled, cut them into thin slices, then dice them into small brunoise (tiny cubes) or coarse chunks.
Next, rinse the potato pieces under cold water. Continue rinsing until the excess starch is removed, as this will help prevent sticking during cooking.
Meanwhile, heat a bit of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the potatoes to the pan and cook them until they are tender but still hold their shape. Season with salt to taste at this stage. Cooking them partially helps them hold together when shaped.
Once cooked, sprinkle a little cornstarch over the potatoes and mix well until the pieces are evenly coated. This coating will add to the crispiness and help bind them.
Now, shape the potato mixture into the classic McDonald’s hash brown form, using your hands or a mold if needed.
If you’re preparing in advance, freeze the shaped hash browns at this stage. Otherwise, you can cook them immediately.
When ready to cook, heat a moderate amount of oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the hash browns for about 5–7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
Finally, remove the hash browns from the pan and drain them on paper towels to soak up excess oil.
Your homemade McDonald’s-style hash browns are now ready to serve! Enjoy them as a delicious and crispy addition to your breakfast.
Recipe Notes;
- Rinsing your potatoes with water is a great way to make them more textured. This simple step removes excess starch, resulting in firmer, more delicious potatoes.
- When you cook the potatoes, be careful not to stir them too much so that they do not break up into pieces.
- For an exciting twist, consider adding fillings or experimenting with different seasonings such as pepper and chili flakes. Not only will this add variety to your dish, but it will also enhance the flavor and make your potato creations stand out. Happy cooking!
