Vermicelli Introduction

Besides rice, the carbohydrates ingredients that are quite popular in Asia are noodles and vermicelli. Indeed, you can find various food made from noodles or vermicelli in Asian countries. You can even find delicious instant noodles or vermicelli. But this time, let’s talk about vermicelli!

Vermicelli is a popular ingredient among Asian people. In various countries, vermicelli has different names such as Vermicelli in China, Bihun in Indonesia, Dangmyeon in Korea, Mustame in Japan, Falooda in India, and others.

Vermicelli or “glass noodles” has an elastic and soft texture. The color is limpid or white like glass. Also, it tastes savorless. Because of that, you can mix vermicelli into many dishes. Therefore, I want to share a simple meatball vermicelli stir fry for your lunch or dinner.

The Ingredients

Vermicelli and water
Vermicelli texture is dry and hard. You can soak it in warm water or boil it for a while. When they are still raw, the vermicelli tends to be translucent and will turn white when cooked.

Meatball (Indonesian Meatball)
Different from other meatballs, Indonesian meatball has a chewy and delicate texture. Indonesian meatball uses finely chopped beef, chicken, or fish. People usually add broth and complementary ingredients (noodles, vermicelli, chili sauce, soy sauce). Yet, I don’t make Indonesia meatball in this recipe. I buy frozen meatball so I can add it to the dish easily.

Oil
You need vegetable oil and sesame oil. You use vegetable oil to saute the dish. Also, sesame oil adds more flavor to the food.

Onion, shallot, green onion, and garlic
The typical ingredients of stir fry! It gives spice to the food. Moreover, I use some Jalapeno to make it spicier.

Vegetables
I prepare the carrot and bok choy. You can change or add other vegetables. It won’t change the taste.

Seasoning
Prepare chicken stock powder, sweet soy sauce, pepper, salt, and sesame seeds for garnish.

How to Make Meatball Vermicelli Stir Fry

Firstly, put vermicelli in 2 cups water until soft. Soak it. It takes 5 – 8 minutes. Set aside.

While waiting for the vermicelli, heat the vegetable oil on medium heat in a large pan or wok.

Then, sauté onion for 2 minutes. After that, add garlic, shallot, jalapeno. Saute it until you can smell the aroma of those ingredients.

After smelling fragrant, add sliced meatball and carrot. Then, you cook it for 3 minutes.

Next, add bok choy and green onion. After that, stir for 1 minute.

In the sixth step, add 1/2 cup water into the pan or wok. Let the water boil. After the water boil, add vermicelli, sesame oil, chicken stock powder, and sweet soy sauce.

Adjust the taste with salt and pepper. Toss this mixture together really well.

The last step, turn off the heat. Afterwards, garnish with sesame seeds and meatball vermicelli stir fry is ready to serve.
