So, what exactly is a smash burger?
A smash burger is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. It is a burger where the beef gets smashed onto the hot cooking surface rather than being shaped into a patty. This trendy burger is made by smashing a thin beef patty on a hot grill, creating a crispy exterior and a juicy interior. It’s easy to make at home and can be customized with your favorite toppings.
Unlike traditional burgers that are shaped into patties, smash burgers are formed into balls of ground beef and then pressed or smashed onto a hot cooking surface. This technique creates a thin, crispy patty with a perfectly charred exterior and a juicy, tender interior.
Here are some key features of a smash burger: Thin patty: Smash burgers are typically much thinner than traditional burgers, resulting in a crispy exterior and a concentrated flavor. Charred edges: The intense heat from the cooking surface creates a delicious char on the edges of the patty. Juicy interior: Despite the thin patty, smash burgers are incredibly juicy due to the way the meat is cooked. Lastly, Customizable: Smash burgers can be customized with a variety of toppings, sauces, and cheeses to suit your preferences.

Ingredients of Smash Burger with Homemade Sauce
- Ground beef; Because I just make the leftover ground beef, this portion is just enough for two people. However, you can always double it based on your needs. I use 80% lean meat. A higher fat percentage is preferable. I’d go with an 80% lean.
- Cheese melt; For topping, you’re gonna save it on the last minute when you cook the patty.
- Burger bun; You’ll want to use lighter bread like a brioche bun or potato bun. Make sure you toast them, too! Butter and toast your buns before cooking burgers so they are ready as soon as the burgers are ready.
- Butter; I use unsalted butter here to toast the burger bun
- Potato Fries; For the side dish. You can skip this or add anything you want. Burger and fries are such a best friend. You could top it with lettuce, tomato slices, and cooked bacon. I highly recommend using our Secret Sauce below, too!
- Seasoning; I use Salt, white Pepper, and Black pepper; Use them for seasoning the ground meat before you smash it in the pan.
Homemade Sauce
- Mayonnaise; My favorite mayonnaise to use for this recipe is Kewpie. You can use whatever your favorite is!
- Mustard; This recipe calls for classic yellow mustard, but you can use Dijon mustard for a delicious twist too. I think you can’t skip this mustard because this is what makes the sauce tasty and unique. So I highly recommend you add mustard.
- Ketchup; Just a touch of ketchup adds exactly the right amount of sweetness to this sauce.
- Garlic powder; Add some pungent flavor but not too much intimidating from raw garlic.
- Paprika powder; To add a hint of spiciness, adjust with your spicy level
