A smash burger is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. It is a burger where the beef gets smashed onto the hot cooking surface rather than being shaped into a patty. This trendy burger is made by smashing a thin beef patty on a hot grill, creating a crispy exterior and a juicy interior. It’s easy to make at home and can be customized with your favorite toppings.

1. Mix the mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, garlic powder, and paprika powder in a small bowl. Set aside. 2. Season the ground beef with ½ tsp salt, ¼ tsp pepper, and ¼ tsp black pepper. Gently mix the seasoning into the meat.

3. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Divide the ground beef into two portions and place each portion into the pan. Use a spatula to smash each portion into thin patties. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until the patties are cooked to your desired level of doneness. 4. During the last minute of cooking, place the cheese slices on top of the patty to melt. 5. Slice the burger bun and spread a thin layer of butter on the cut sides. Toast the buttered sides in the skillet or on a separate pan until golden brown.

6. Spread a layer of the prepared burger sauce on the bottom half of the toasted bun. Place one patty with cheese on top of the sauce, then add the second patty on top of the first patty. Spread more burger sauce on top of the second patty. Cover with the top half of the toasted bun. 7. If using frozen fries, cook them according to the package instructions. Season with additional salt and pepper if desired. 8. Serve the smash burger with the fries on the side.

Recipe Note 1. Smash the burger patties until they are thin and form a crust for a more pronounced flavor. Use a smashing tool for the best results. 2. For the burger sauce, adjust the amount of paprika powder according to your taste.
