A beef burrito is a popular Mexican dish consisting of a flour tortilla wrapped around various ingredients, with beef being a primary filling. You can cook the beef in multiple ways, like grilling, braising, or stewing. Generally, season and cook the beef with spices like chili powder, cumin, garlic, and onion. Common ingredients in a beef burrito comprise rice, beans, cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, and lettuce. Roll the burrito into a cylindrical shape for easy handling and on-the-go eating
This dish has its roots in Mexico, but has been adapted to the tastes of the United States, giving rise to a style of cooking known as Tex-Mex. A beef burrito is a great way to enjoy a variety of flavors in one delicious meal.
Choosing the Best Meat for Your Burrito
Choosing the best beef for your burrito is key to achieving that perfect, flavorful dish. The type of beef you use will depend on the recipe you are using, as some recipes call for lean beef, while others require fattier cuts. Ground beef is a popular choice for burritos, as it is easy to cook and flavorful. If you are looking for a leaner option, you can choose a leaner cut of beef, such as flank steak or sirloin, or go for a leaner ground beef. With the right beef and the perfect recipe, you can make an amazing burrito that will have your taste buds dancing!
Beside using beef, you can making burritos depends on personal preference, but some popular options include Grilled Chicken, It’s lean, flavorful, and versatile. For vegetarian option, To create a vegetarian option, incorporate plant-based alternatives such as grilled vegetables, beans (like black beans or pinto beans), tofu, or meat substitutes such as seitan or tempeh. These options offer delicious alternatives to meat, providing a satisfying and flavorful burrito experience.
Ingredients of Beef Burrito
- Ground Beef; This is the main protein component of the burrito filling. Ground beef is typically seasoned and cooked until browned and flavorful. I prefer to use lean ground beef (90-95% lean) for less greasy burritos. If using a fattier beef, you will want to drain off some of the fat. Turkey or chicken will work just as well
- Black Beans/Kidney Beans drained; feel free to do just one or the other. Ensure the beans are well-rinsed to avoid excess salt
- Olive Oil; Used for cooking the ground beef and sautéing the onions and garlic. It adds flavor and helps prevent sticking to the pan.
- Onion finely chopped; adds an earthy and sweet flavor to the meat, Use a large onion, sliced. White or yellow will both work.
- Garlic minced; is an aromatic ingredient that adds depth of flavor to the filling. It’s often sautéed with the onions and ground beef.
- Paprika; Adds color and a mild, sweet flavor to the beef filling. It can be smoked or sweet paprika, depending on your preference.
- For seasoning here I use, Ground Cumin, Oregano, Cayenne Pepper, Tomato Paste and Beef Stock
- Corriander (cilantro) chopped; this herb adds freshness and a bright, citrusy flavor to the finished burrito. It’s often used as a garnish
Serve
- 9 18 cm Flour Tortilla 18 cm; Large flour tortillas wrap all the ingredients together. Warm them slightly before assembling them to make rolling easier. We love burrito-sized flour tortillas, but you can use smaller tortillas for mini burritos, or try corn or cassava for a different flavor.
- Cooked Rice; helps to bulk up these burritos. You can make the rice up to a day in advance to save time. you can use microwaveable or cooked rice as a quick alternative. For me as an Indonesian, we always have cooked rice in the kitchen, but I am wondering how do you cook rice.
- For veggies serving I add some Tomato, Lettuce, Red Onion everything diced unless the lettuce. You can swap the lettuce with fresh cilantro. Feel free to substitute the veggies with your own liking.
- Cheddar Cheese; Freshly grated sharp Cheddar cheese melts into the warm filling. I recommend grating your own cheese for the best melt, shredded cheese doesn’t melt as well. Adds richness and creaminess to the burrito. Grated cheddar cheese is commonly used as a filling ingredient and topping.
How to Make Beef Burrito
First, heat olive oil over medium-high heat, Then sauté onion and garlic for 2 minutes: Add finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the hot oil. Cook them for about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion starts to brown slightly and becomes fragrant.
Next, Once the onion is softened and slightly browned, introduce the ground beef to the pan. Use a spatula or spoon to break up the beef into smaller pieces as it cooks.
Continuously stir and cook the ground beef until it browns thoroughly, ensuring there are no pink spots remaining. then, sprinkle ground cumin, paprika, dried oregano, and cayenne pepper over the cooked beef. Stir well to evenly distribute the spices and cook for an additional minute to allow the flavors to meld.
Add tomato puree, beef stock, and black beans: Pour in the tomato paste (or puree), beef stock, and drained black beans. Stir everything together, then allow the mixture to simmer until most of the liquid evaporates, but the filling remains juicy.
Once the filling is cooked and the liquid has reduced to desired consistency, incorporate the chopped coriander (cilantro). Stir well to combine, then remove the pan from the heat.
Let’s assemble the beef burrito, start with Lay a flour tortilla on a flat working surface. Spoon cooked rice onto the lower center of the tortilla. Top the rice with the beef filling, followed by lettuce, diced tomato, diced red onion, and grated cheddar cheese.
Fold, Wrap and Bake
Now, Fold both ends of the tortilla inward, then tightly roll it up from the bottom over the filling until it forms a cylindrical shape. Tuck in any loose ends to secure the filling inside.
To keep the burrito secure and maintain its shape, wrap it tightly with foil.
Place the wrapped burritos in a heated pan over medium heat. Heat them until all sides are hot enough to melt the cheese and the burritos are warmed through. Serve with sour cream: Optionally, serve the hot beef burritos with sour cream on the side for dipping or drizzling
