What is sloppy joe?
A sloppy joe is a sandwich consisting of ground beef (usually pork or beef), onions, ketchup or tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings. Then, people served it with the addition of toast hamburger bun. This dish originated in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century.
American cookbooks of the early and mid-20th century offered many types of sloppy joe recipes. They have different names such as Deviled Grilled Hamburger, Minced Meat Sandwich, Spanish Hamburger, Hamburg a la Creole, Beef Mironton, and Meat Spanish Style Grind.
The name sloppy Joe’s comes from a cheap restaurant or fast food counter serving cheap food quickly or the diners wearing casual clothes. Food companies began producing sloppy joe in cans of meat, or just the sauce, such as Manwich, in the 1960s.

Several variations of the sloppy joe exist in North America. In Quebec, Canada, they use hotdog buns with ground-boiled meat sandwiches such as pain à la viande and pain fourré gumbo. You can find a similar sandwich in the area around Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Some sandwiches use onions, peppers, and sometimes celery.
Stewed meat sandwiches are also common in several other traditional culinary such as rou Jia mo from China’s Shaanxi Province. It consists of pork, beef, or lamb. After the boiling process, they place the meat on a steamed bun.
Also, there is a similar dish in India. The name is Keema pav. It uses pav bread with keema. Keema is minced meat that is boiled and seasoned with curry. After that add ground beef and sauté until all the beef is cooked and a little bit charred. Add salt to your taste.
For the seasoning add beef stock powder, chili powder, sugar, black pepper, worcestershire sauce, and Indonesian chili sauce. Stir until all combine. Add salt if necessary.
Put about 2-3 tbsp sloppy joe on each bottom half of bun. Add handful of mozzarella cheese on top. Broil until the mozzarella cheese has melted. Then put the top half of bun on top. Cheesy sloppy joe burgers are ready to serve.
Recipe Notes :
- Make sure your ingredients are ready beforehand, don’t let the pan burn.
- Before you start, it is better to bake your bread. You can choose your favorite bread to mix with sloppy joe.
- Pay attention to the sauce so it doesn’t thicken too much. If the sauce is too much, you will end up with a dry sloppy joe mixture.
- Make sure you drain excess fat from the beef.
- Stop cooking when the meat still wet, it will absorb into the meat when you let it sit for a few minutes.
- If you want to prepare food, let the sauce thicken before turning off the heat. You may need a little water when reheating.
- Don’t add the cheese too early, add just enough so the cheese melts a little.
Can you freeze it?
You can freeze the meat, then defrost and put the sliders together, but you can’t freeze the Cheesy Sloppy Joe Burger. The bread will become mushy if you put it into the refrigerator.
To freeze it, you can freeze the meat in a plastic freezer bag or label labeled. Then, put into the freezer, put on a plate or baking sheet (so as not to stick to the grid or freezer floor). Frozen meat will last about 5 to 6 months in the deep freezer.
