What are Deviled Eggs?
The word “deviled” actually goes all the way back to the 18th century, when it was used to describe dishes that were super spicy or well-seasoned. When we say something is deviled, it just means it’s packed with bold flavors, usually spicy or tangy. Deviled eggs are basically hard-boiled eggs that are peeled, cut in half, and filled with a mix of mashed yolks, mayo, mustard, and seasonings (usually paprika).
The term “deviled” started popping up in recipes back in 1786. So, no need to worry—there’s nothing “evil” about deviled eggs! The term came from old English cooking, where deviled just meant fried or boiled food. By the way, this information is coming from Wikipedia, just correct me if I’m wrong, thank you!

Ingredients of Best Deviled Egg
- Hard Boiled Egg; I use 6 medium-sized eggs here. Unfortunately, my egg is less hard here. I recommend you use a hard-boiled egg rather than a soft-boiled one. Once boiled, the yolks are removed and mixed with other ingredients to create a creamy filling, while the whites act as the perfect vessel.
- Mayonnaise; provides richness and creaminess to the filling. It helps bind the mashed yolks and adds a smooth, velvety texture to the mixture.
- Dijon Mustard; adds a subtle tang and sharpness that balances the richness of the mayonnaise. It has a smoother, milder taste compared to yellow mustard, offering a refined flavor. this might seem a bit strange but the vinegar in the mustard brightens up the other flavors
- Salt; enhances all the flavors in the dish.
- Ground Black Pepper; adds a slight heat and earthiness, giving a subtle but essential depth to the flavor profile of the filling.
- Dash Tabasco Sauce; adds a mild, tangy heat that lifts the flavor without overpowering the dish. The amount is usually minimal, just to give a slightly spicy kick.
- Paprika; adds a mild sweetness and smokiness, depending on the type of paprika used, and gives the deviled eggs a vibrant color.
- Fresh Chives snipped, garnish; bring a mild oniony flavor and a bright, fresh taste to the dish. It’s used as a garnish to enhance both flavor and appearance, adding color to the deviled eggs.
- Bacon optional, finely minced; adds a smoky, salty crunch to the deviled eggs. Finely minced, crispy bacon provides texture and an extra layer of flavor that pairs wonderfully with the creamy filling.
Recipe Variations
The possibility of adding this deviled egg is endless, you can add some additional ingredients you can try for unique variations of deviled eggs such as
- Avocado, Replace or mix with mayonnaise for a creamy, healthy twist. It adds a smooth texture and a fresh flavor, perfect for an avocado-deviled egg
- Pickle Relish Pickles or Capers bring a briny, salty flavor, which works well with the creamy filling. Adding sweet or dill pickle relish introduces a slight crunch and tangy sweetness, balancing the creaminess of the yolk mixture.
- Sour Cream or Greek Yogurt, Use sour cream or Greek yogurt for a lighter, tangier filling. This substitution reduces the richness while adding a refreshing tang.
- Cheese (Cheddar or Cream Cheese) Mix in shredded cheddar or cream cheese for a creamy, cheesy flavor. Cream cheese adds richness, while cheddar adds a sharp bite.
- Sriracha or Hot Sauce If you like a spicier version, add sriracha or your favorite hot sauce to the yolk mixture for a bolder flavor.
- Pesto Mix in some basil pesto for an herbaceous twist. It adds freshness and a slight nuttiness from the pine nuts in the pesto. I made this recipe, check this out; Basil pesto

How to Make The Best Deviled Egg
To begin, place the eggs in a medium saucepan and fill the pan with enough water so that it covers the eggs by about an inch. Bring to a boil over high heat, then remove the pan from the heat, cover, and let stand for 10 minutes.
Second, halve boiled eggs lengthwise and remove the yolks. After boiling the eggs and allowing them to cool, peel them carefully.
Then, Slice each egg lengthwise from top to bottom (not across the middle). Gently scoop out the egg yolks and place them into a mixing bowl, being careful not to tear the egg whites.
Mash the egg yolks and add in mayonnaise, dijon mustard, salt, black pepper, and Tabasco; stir until well combined. Use a fork or potato masher to thoroughly mash the egg yolks until smooth.
Stir the mixture until it becomes smooth and creamy. Ensure all the ingredients are well incorporated for the best flavor and texture.
Next, Transfer the yolk mixture to a piping bag, then fill the egg whites. Don’t worry, If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a ziplock bag and snip off a small corner to pipe the mixture.
Fill each of the egg white halves generously with the yolk mixture. Piping helps to create a neat presentation.
Now, sprinkle a light dusting of paprika over the filled eggs to add color and a bit of smoky flavor. Garnish with snipped fresh chives for freshness and brightness. Also, optionally, add finely minced bacon for a savory, crunchy topping.
Finally, Serve immediately and enjoy your best-deviled egg!
