Did French Toast Come From France?
From the name, we might assume that this bread is from France.
But actually, french toast does not originate from France. Also, it is not a typical dish of this country. In French, french toast is called pain perdu or lost bread.
.After reading from various sources on the internet, I found there are two sources of the beginning of the naming of this dish. I consider both of these theories is the most reasonable story.
First, the reason for the name french toast is because it matches the name of the maker. He is a famous baker. His name is Joseph French. Due to a typo, this bread made by Mr. French was later called a french toast. Though, it should be written as French’s toast, which means French’s bread.
The second explanation is more reasonable than the first one. The name of french toast comes from the real meaning of the language used in that era.
Results from various sources estimate the use of the name french toast occurred in the 17th century. That’s because the use of the name french toast refers to the use of the same language at that time.
Allegedly, the name of this dish comes from the Old Irish language, namely to french. In Old Irish, to french means to cut. The reason for its name is because the bread is used to make french toast. It uses cut or slice bread.
French Toast, Roman Bread Breakfast Menu
Currently, many people have breakfast with a toast menu. European or American countries usually enjoy toast for their breakfast. So is the case with this french toast.
However, based on history, french toast has been a breakfast menu since around the 4th century in Rome. The Ancient Romans preferred breakfast with their creations of bread. But apparently, they process their bread similar to the french toast that we enjoy today. After that, medieval European society began to follow this ancient Roman style of bread cooking.
Another interesting thing is the use of stale bread to make french toast. To make french toast, Europeans at that time would make it from stale bread. That’s because they think the use of this stale bread will make the bread taste more delicious.
What is the best bread choice for this recipe?
For bread, you can use whatever is on your dining table. I usually use white bread for this menu. However, you can use other bread or gluten-free and vegan bread. You can use brioche, challah, sourdough, boule, Texas toast, or a baguette.
The interesting thing, you can use bread that will go stale to make this french toast. The dry texture of the bread will be tastier and less mushy when you fry it. That’s because the bread has a firmer texture. Slightly thicker cuts also allow the bread to absorb the wet spices better.
