Whether you’re enjoying these fish fingers as a snack, appetizer, or main course, the homemade touch will make them even more memorable. Happy cooking!
Ingredients of Fish Finger with Tartar Sauce
- Fish Fillet; here I use dory fish. White fish fillets are the star of this dish. They provide a mild, flaky, and tender texture. you can use any firm white fish – cod, haddock or pollock are ideal, but you could also use salmon, hake, kingklip, or barramundi. The fish should be cut into evenly sized-strips. Bear in mind that the fish will shrink slightly when cooked, so don’t make the strips too small.
- Lemon Juice; helps to tenderize the fish and balances the richness of other ingredients.
- Breadcrumbs; for the last layer in the fish, give extra crisp and crunchy the fish finger
- All-purpose Flour; as a wet first layer for coating the fish
- Paprika Powder, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, and Mushroom Powder; these all powder use to enhance the taste profile of the fish
- Parmesan Cheese; when grated and mixed with breadcrumbs, adds a savory, nutty flavor to the coating. It also aids in browning.
- Egg beaten; will use a mix with the all-purpose flour
- Salt and Black Pepper; basic seasoning
Tartar Sauce
actually, for Tartar sauce you can buy instant one if you in a little time. you can also change the tartar sauce with other sauces based on your preference. But for me personally, fish finger or fish and co with tartar sauce is an absolute soulmate! here the ingredient for homemade Tartar sauce;
- Mayonnaise; as the base for the tartar sauce, you can use full-fat mayonnaise or the lighter variety.
- Lemon Juice; you will only need a small amount or the tartare sauce will be too sour, but just a dash makes all the difference to the flavour.
- Onion; adds more texture and also adds mild pungency to the sauce
- Garlic Powder
- Capers minced; the key ingredient for making tartar sauce, add tartness like tartar sauce hehe
- Parsley; this should be finely chopped. Use fresh herbs if possible, but if you only have dried dill and parsley you can use that
- Boiled White Egg; adds both texture and a creamy richness to the tartar sauce. this what makes the tartar sauce flavorful
- Honey; has natural sweetness and balanced tartness from lemon juice and capers
- Salt and Black Pepper
How to Make Fish Finger with Tartar Sauce
Fish finger
First thing first, cut the fish fillet lengthwise and marinate the fish with lemon juice, a pinch of salt, and black pepper. Let it sit for 30 minutes and set aside.
Move on to the second step in another bowl, mix all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, paprika powder, garlic powder, onion powder, mushroom powder, and parmesan cheese. Stir until well combined.
Then, Coat the fish with flour mixture until all surfaces are covered then dip it into beaten eggs. After that, roll it in bread crumbs until the entire surface is coated. Repeat the process with the rest of the fish.
Now, prepare to fry. In a pan heat oil over medium heat and fry the fish finger until nice and golden. After the fish finger is cooked, rest it on a cooling rack to remove excess oil.
Tartar Sauce
Making Tartar sauce is so simple. First, prepare mayonnaise in a small bowl, then add diced egg whites, minced capers, onion, garlic powder, parsley, salt, black pepper, and honey. Mix well.
Finally, add lemon juice and mix until well blended. Transfer it to a sauce bowl.
Voila! Fish finger with tartar sauce is ready to serve. Enjoy every bite of the crunchy and soft fish inside, if you’re not a fish lover. You should give it a try because this is not fishy and smelly lol. Happy eating friends 😉
Recipe Notes;
- Try to cut all the pieces of fish the same size so that they cook evenly.
- Pat the fish gently with a sheet of paper towel to make sure it is dry before you add the coating. Because it ensures the coating will stick firmly to the fish, and less water will make it dry resulting in a crispier coating.
- It is better to rest the coated fish fingers in the refrigerator for half an hour before cooking them to give the coating time to settle on the fish.
- You can add some spicy to the batter of coating for a spicier taste
