What is Shepherd’s Pie?
Shepherd’s pie is basically a casserole with a layer of meat and vegetables, layer with mashed potatoes, and bake in the oven until the mashed potatoes are well brown. The meat may be either previously cooked or freshly minced. The meat used are lamb for original way, but later it can be use beef
This classic dish originally came from Ireland, but it can be found as a popular dish across the United Kingdom, especially in Northern England and Scotland as well.
The dish is believed to have emerged in the late 1700s or early 1800s. It was initially create as a way to use leftover roasted meat, particularly lamb, by mincing it and combining it with vegetables and a potato crust. While for The original ways of using up leftover roast meat by chopping it finely, modern recipes typically call for ground meat, which cooks quickly and doesn’t require leftovers
In England (and Australia and New Zealand) they would call the beef dish a “cottage pie” and the lamb dish “shepherd’s pie”.
Shepherd’s Pie Vs Cottage Pie
So, what the different between shepherd’s pie and Cottage pie? It lies on the meat they use. Cottage Pie use beef and Shepherd’s Pie use lamb.
Also, it says that Shepherds herd sheep. Not cows. lol. Other than beef vs lamb, they are essentially exactly the same recipe.
Today, the terms “Shepherd’s Pie” and “Cottage Pie” are sometimes interchangeably.
In summary, Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie have similar historical roots as thrifty, comforting dishes. Theydistinguish primarily by usage of type of meat in their fillings.
Ingredients of Shepherd’s Pie
- Beef; For the original classic shepherd’s pie it use lamb or sheep, meanwhile here I use ground beef. In other hand you can use leftover beef or lamb you have, the instructions will remain the same
- Potato ; Use the large one, Use starchy potatoes (like russet or Yukon Gold) for the best mashed potatoes. For making Mashed potato, I use butter, onion, and Cheddar cheese.
- Butter; use unsalted butter to add creamy texture, helps with color and keeps the potatoes moist
- Italian Herbs; will be use for mixing in making mashed potato
- Milk; one of base ingredients for making mashed potato. It helps achieve a smooth and velvety texture
- Parmesan Cheese; add creamy texture
- Cooking Oil; use for sauteeing the garlic onion and vegetables. feel free to use olive oil or any other oils
- Onion and Garlic; sauteeing until fragrants, of course for adding aromatic and savory taste
- Vegetable Mix; For this vegetable you can use what u like the most, for example mushroom, spinac, carrots will be awesome.
- Green Bell Pepper; I use for a milder spicy taste, Green bell peppers contribute a fresh, slightly tangy flavor to the filling. They also provide a lovely burst of green color.
- Parsley; as Garnish, to add a touch of freshness and vibrant green color to the finished Shepherd’s Pie.
- Seasonings here use Worcestershire Sauce, Dark Soy Sauce, Beef Stock Powder, Salt and Black Pepper, and Sugar. You can adjust them based on your preference
How to Make Shepherd’s Pie
To make this Classis Shepherd’s Pie recipe let’s divided into 3 parts, preparing the mashed potatoes, Make beef gravy and veggies, bake and serving;
Preparing the Mashed Potatoes
Begin by peeling the potatoes and cutting them into large pieces. Next, place them in a large pot filled with water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat and let the potatoes simmer for 20-25 minutes or until they are fork-tender. Once the potatoes cooked, carefully drain them, wait until the temperature cooling down, and transfer them to a blender.
In the blender, puree the potatoes until they achieve a smooth consistency. Now, transfer the creamy potato mixture to a mixing bowl. To enhance the flavor and texture, add butter, milk, parmesan cheese, Italian herbs, salt, and black pepper to the mixing bowl. Be sure to mix these ingredients until well combined. Then, set this mixture aside.
Now, Move to other part!
Making Beef and Veggies
To create a flavorful beef filling, sauté garlic, onion, and sliced green bell pepper in a pan. Sauté them until they become translucent and release a fragrant aroma. Next, add the ground beef, vegetable mix, Italian herbs, parsley, Worcestershire sauce, dark soy sauce, beef stock powder, sugar, salt, and black pepper to the pan.
If you have leftover meat, just mix them all. Ensure that you stir this mixture well to incorporate all the ingredients. Continue to cook it until the beef is fully cooked through. After the beef filling is done, turn off the heat and set it aside for later use.
Baking the Shepherd’s Pie:
Now, it’s time to prepare your dish for baking. Preheat your oven to 180℃ (350℉). To ensure your Shepherd’s Pie doesn’t stick to the casserole, generously grease it with cooking oil.
With your casserole ready, pour the prepared beef mixture into it and spread it evenly to create a smooth base. Now, the final layer: Carefully spread the mashed potatoes over the beef, ensuring they cover it completely. Now, let’s bake your Shepherd’s Pie. Place it in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes or until it’s cooked through.
The Shepherd’s Pie is at its best when served warm, so once it’s done baking, serve it immediately. Enjoy your homemade Shepherd’s Pie!
Storing and Freezing Shepherd’s Pie
For Storing, please kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator, leftovers will keep 3 to 5 days. Large portions can be reheated in a 350° oven for 10 to 15 minutes, or until warm.
If you’d like to freeze your shepherd’s pie, simply wait for it to cool, then Wrap the completely cooled shepherd’s pie (baking dish and all) in a layer of storage wrap then a layer of aluminum foil. It’s probably easier to bake the shepherd’s pie in a disposable foil baking dish for easy freezing. Store the entire baking dish in the freezer for up to three months.

Ingredients
- ½ lb Ground Beef
- 3 large Potato
- 2 tbsp Butter
- ½ tbsp Italian Herbs
- ½ cup Milk
- 1 tbsp Cooking Oil
- ½ Onion
- 1 cup Vegetable Mix
- ½ Green Bell Pepper
- 1 tbsp Parsley
- 2 clove Garlic
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 tsp Dark Soy Sauce
- 1 tbsp Beef Stock Powder
- ½ tsp Salt
- ½ tsp Black Pepper
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 1 tbsp Parmesan Cheese
Instructions

Saute garlic, onion, and sliced green bell pepper until translucent and fragrant. Add ground beef, vegetable mix, italian herbs, parsley, worcestershire sauce, dark soy sauce, beef stock powder, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and cook until the beef is cooked through. Turn off the heat and set aside.

Preheat oven to 180℉

Grease the casserole with cooking oil, pour in and spread evenly the beef mixture. Spread the mashed potatoes over the beef, covering it completely. Bake for 30 minutes or until cooked through. Serve while the shepherds pie is warm.
