What is a waffle?
As you heard the name of waffle many times, I bet you already know what is waffle, basically, Waffles are those delicious, fluffy squares (or sometimes circles!) you might have seen for breakfast. They’re made from a batter of flour, eggs, milk, and a raising agent (like baking powder originally yeast) that gets cooked between two hot, patterned plates. This creates a crispy outside and a soft, light inside. Waffles are popular worldwide, and Belgium is famous for having over a dozen different types! The best part? You can enjoy them with sweet toppings like fruit and syrup, or savory options like cheese and vegetables.
Now, please move to the Belgian waffle which makes it different from a regular waffle.
Belgian waffles are not just any regular old waffle. They’re thicker, fluffier, and have a nice crisp exterior. Normally Belgian waffles are made with yeast, but thank god, now we have a secret swap to baking powder and white egg that will achieve the same delicious texture and flavor or even better taste that are folded into the batter. This will guarantee you light, fluffy, and golden waffles.
Moreover, Belgian waffles are thicker and often larger than regular waffles because they are made with a waffle iron that has deeper grids. These deep pockets are perfect for holding delicious pools of syrup and other toppings
The best part? You get to control the toppings, so unleash your creativity and conquer your waffle cravings today! Check out the full recipe below and get ready to impress yourself with your homemade Belgian waffle skills!
Ingredients of Belgian Waffle
- Flour; I use All-purpose flour here. Sift the flour for extra fluffiness.
- Sugar; White, granulated sugar works best in this recipe. I used granulated sugar, you can substitute it with brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup.
- Baking soda and Baking powder; Any name-brand will work in this Belgian waffles recipe, Both work to make the waffles light and airy.
- Salt; This brings out the flavors in the waffles so they don’t taste bland. Just a pinch of sea salt will do.
- Eggs (separate the egg yolk and white); Make sure the whites are separated from the yolks! We separate the whites to make our Belgian waffles extra light and fluffy.
- Milk; Any milk you have is great.
- Whipping cream; I use cold Whipped cream here. You can use heavy cream too.
- Melted Butter (50 gr); make sure to use unsalted
- Vanilla extract; vanilla Extract will give your Belgian waffle a fancy aroma, Real vanilla does make a difference but imitation will be fine if that’s what you have.
How To Make Belgian Waffle
Start with making the batter, in a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda (if using), and salt.
Next, add the wet ingredients: egg yolks, milk, whipping cream, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix well using a whisk or electric mixer on low speed until there are no lumps remaining.
Then, In a separate bowl, grab your electric mixer and beat the egg whites on high speed until they form stiff peaks. This will create a light and fluffy texture in the final waffles.
Move, take a small amount of batter, and fold it into the egg whites using a spatula. Be careful not to overmix! Once somewhat combined, fold the egg white mixture back into the main batter until just incorporated.
Cook & Enjoy!
Now, preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When hot, pour about 3/4 cup of batter onto the iron. Close the lid and cook until both sides are golden brown and crispy. This usually takes a few minutes, so keep an eye on it to avoid burning. Repeat this process until all the batter is done.
Finally, serve your delicious homemade Belgian waffle with your favorite toppings like ice cream, fresh fruit slices, whipped cream, or even something savory! Here I add some fresh strawberry, vanilla Ice cream, and drizzle with some powdered sugar. It’s so Mouthwatering! Last thing, enjoy your weekend!
Storing and Reheating Tips
The best way to store Belgian waffles is to allow them to cool to room temperature, then place them in an airtight bag or container. For freezing time is the best way to store these cooked waffles into large ziploc bags, being sure to remove as much air as possible without flattening the waffles. Store in the freezer for up to two months.
To reheat Belgian waffles to take out of the container or bag you’ve stored them in. Put them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (no need to grease) and then pop them in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes, or till just heated through.
Or if you have a wide enough toaster, you can toast them back to life too. For additional, to get the toasty edges, brush with a little melted butter and then place under the broiler for 30 seconds per side OR until the waffle is as crispy as you’d like.
