Actually, there are a lot of trends on Tiktok about food and just meh, but for this recipe, well such an irresistible not to recreate, beside the ingredients are easy and not that complicated and much!
Thinly sliced beef surround rice, topped with butter, corn, spring onions, cheese, and egg ( optional, if you want to), on a hot skillet. It gets delivered like that to your table sizzling hot, and you drizzle over the two sauces – to your liking. Then you grab your spoon and mix everything together while the beef cooks on the sizzling plate.
The dish is typically served on a metal plate, which keeps the food hot and sizzling until the last bite. The hot plate also allows the rice to cook and absorb the flavors of the sauce and meats and also gave a crispy sensation for the rice. Moreover, it can be for a big portion, perfect for sharing.
Speaking about copycatting this recipe, let’s talk about pepper lunch history first
Brief History of Pepper Lunch
According to Wikipedia, Pepper Lunch restaurant originated in Japan in 1994 by chef and inventor Kunio Ichinose, who wanted to serve quality fast food without hiring a chef. He devised a method using hot metal plates that are heated to 500 degrees Fahrenheit (260 Celsius) by an electromagnetic cooker. The raw meat with vegetables and/or rice are then placed on the plates, where they cook in front of the customer.
Pepper Lunch is a Japanese fast-food chain restaurant famous for their beef pepper rice. Their beef pepper rice typically consists of sizzling hot grilled beef slices served with a bed of rice, with a generous sprinkle of black pepper, corn and green onions. This dish often comes with a special garlic and honey soy sauce to drizzle over the meat and rice.
When you dine in at Pepper Lunch, there would be two bottles of sauces on the table. One of the sauces is a Honey Soy Sauce, called Amakuchi. The other sauce is a peppery Garlic Soy Sauce, called Karakuchi. You’re supposed to add the sauces to your preferences when your sizzling hotplate arrives at the table and mix it in with everything!
Here’s a little secret, I try to combine 2 sauces and make them in one sauce only, and it turn out magic!
I don’t take any dish lightly. Beef Pepper Rice from Pepper Lunch, however, has me all in. Not only is it delicious, but also it is served in a big portion. This copycat recipe is truly a must-try for any food enthusiast.

What Goes in Beef Pepper Rice
- Beef Slice or Shabu-Shabu Beef; Thinly sliced beef is of course one of the most important ingredients for this recipe. You can find this in the frozen or meat section of most grocery stores.
- Rice; Fresh rice works fine for this recipe, however, I actually prefer to use day-old rice because it won’t get as soggy.
- Sweet Corn; you can buy the frozen package or buy whole corn and then peel the corn, that’s not matter
- Butter unsalted; Adding butter creates flavor and helps cook everything down a little more. I used unsalted butter which I can adjust for the flavor
- Scallion; add great color and contrast to the dish. I usually thinly slice my green onions, but for this recipe, you can actually cut them slightly thicker and a lot.
- Cooking Oil; I add a bit of oil to my skillet to help brown the beef.
- Black Pepper; we need a lot of black pepper since it is a beef and pepper recipe
Sauce
I combine the two sauces Amakuchi a type of Honey Soy Sauce and Karakuchi a type of Garlic Soy Sauce, in one sauce. I’m not saying this sauce is 100% the same as the original pepper lunch sauce, but it’s a perfect combination and easy to make, you will need;
- Onion & Garlic; Add sweetness and a pungent depth of flavor to the dish while providing a contrasting texture to the tender beef
- Honey; Amakuchi sauce ingredients
- Soy Sauce; Provides a salty and savory taste to the dish while adding depth and richness, and also enhances the umami flavor of the beef.
- Black Pepper; The star ingredient that gives the dish its distinct flavor. Black pepper provides a spicy and aromatic kick, enhancing the taste of the beef and vegetables
- Ginger; to add aromatic
Instructions for Making Beef Pepper Rice
Make the Sauce
Start with preparing the flavorful sauce by combining all the sauce ingredients, such as onion, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, honey, and black pepper, into a wet mill. This will help to ensure that the onion, ginger, and garlic are finely crushed and their flavors are released. Once combined, transfer the mixture to a blender and blend until you have a smooth sauce. The sauce acts as a key component, infusing the dish with its savory, tangy, and slightly sweet flavors. Set the sauce aside for later use.
Next, shape the rice to create a visually appealing presentation. Take a bowl or rice mold and press the cooked white rice firmly into it, creating a compact shape. This helps to ensure that the rice holds its form when plated. Once shaped, carefully transfer the rice to the center of a hot pan or skillet.
Now, it’s time to assemble the dish. Arrange the thinly sliced beef around the rice, creating a circular pattern. This not only adds visual appeal but also allows the beef to cook evenly. Drizzle the prepared sauce between the rice and the beef, ensuring that it coats the ingredients evenly.
Then, to add a touch of freshness and texture, top the dish with sweet corn kernels, finely chopped scallions, a pat of butter for richness, and a sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper.
Let’s Sizzle it
It’s time to cook everything together. Turn on the heat under the pan or skillet and allow the beef to cook until it reaches the desired level of doneness. At the same time, the rice will start to develop a slight crispness, adding a delightful texture to the dish. The sizzling and cooking process creates an interactive and exciting dining experience reminiscent of the original Pepper Lunch concept.
Finally, it’s time to serve the sizzling Beef Pepper Rice. Carefully transfer the hot pan or skillet to a heat-resistant surface, taking caution to protect your hands.
Enjoy while still warm, so serve it immediately to ensure that the beef is tender and the rice maintains its crispness
Grab your chopsticks or fork, mix everything together to combine the flavors, and savor each delectable bite. Enjoy the sizzling delights of Beef Pepper Rice and relish the unique culinary experience it offers!
This is the appearance after you mix everything, it is more like fried rice and simple dish, but after you put in your mouth surprise! This is so delicious and yes you succeeded make this recipe at home!
Recipe Notes;
- If you are not sure if the slice was cooked or not, you can cook the beef first before, or marinating first is alright. To avoid beef undercooked and hard, I recommend you use thin beef slices or shabu-shabu
- It’s better to use a cast-iron pan to make this recipe to make more “sizzling,” like Pepper Lunch. However, you can make this recipe in a regular pan, on low to medium heat. Cook everything in it as you would in the cast-iron skillet. You just won’t have the same charred effect, but it’s no big deal!
- For the variation’s recipe, you can substitute the beef with salmon, and chicken works well. You can fry an egg on top makes for a delicious addition too.
