Short getaway to hometown
Last weekend my family went to my hometown. A village with basic jobs is the farmer. They farm vegetables such as potato, cabbage, carrot, green onion, celery, and other vegetables. My home town is a highland. there was a plantation a whole road to the village. We took almost 3 hours driving. As I arrived home, my grandmother already served a warm pumpkin soup at such a very cold temperature there. For your information, it was almost 9 degrees there. Since my country only has 2 seasons, we do not have a winter season. So it is freezing for us huhu.
It was such a perfect menu that my grandmother brought to me with that pumpkin soup. Unfortunately, my son which is a picky eater doesn’t like it that very much. He doesn’t like vegetables as much as I do. We went for a picnic date with fresh air there, it is such a pleasant time and stress refresher before we come back to the daily routine.
The next day we returned to our residence. My grandmother gave us many vegetables. This is such a tradition when we return to our house in the city, for example, people in villages gave us so many things to bring. Such a souvenir in a heavy size. You can imagine how heavy the big pumpkin and my grandmother gave us 3, I said
“ That is okay grandma, I gonna take one only, it is heavy to take in the car” gently rejected my grandmother offers
My grandmother little bit disappointed “ It is too bad dear, you can cook it later and make your pumpkin soup. If you insisted okay just take two then”
Finally, I took two big pumpkins with me, and a sack of other vegetables which contain potato, cabbage, carrot, chili, and a few onions and celery. I don’t need to go groceries for a week. Thank you, Grandma, we love you!

Luckily my son loves the shape of my pumpkin bun, I make a bun so I can add fill pumpkin puree and my son eats the vegetable. Pumpkin is so nourishing with a lot of benefits from this vegetable. He eats the pumpkin bun without any hesitation and rejection. This is such an adorable feeling for a mom.

Do bread, bun and rolls are the same?
To answer this question, the dough for making them is the same, which basic ingredients generally has four ingredients: flour, water, salt, and yeast. the difference is in their shape, size, and texture. Let’s talk a bit about them.
Bread
First, Bread usually makes in one big size and serves for several people or might be several servings for one person. mostly unleavened, flat, or loaf-shaped as well. such as a loaf of bread
Bun
A bun is small, sometimes sweet. Though they come in many shapes and sizes, they are most commonly a single-serving baked good, hand-sized or smaller, with a round top and flat bottom. a bun typically containing dried fruit or some filling.
The name of the bun comes from the hairstyle that involves a tight coil of hair on the top or back of the head is also called a bun. The origin is probably the French buignete, “a fritter,”. Bun also made bun is used to make a burger. The texture of the bun is regularly yeasty.
Rolls
The last is one is rolls. Rolls is a dough usually round in shape, and generally smaller than buns. These rolls can come in many shapes. The toll might be fancier, for example, soft dinner rolls are enriched dough with a more creamy texture. all of the dough basically is depending on how you shape it, you can use this dough to make hotdog or hamburger buns, or as the base for cinnamon rolls
Are rolls the same as a bun?
However, bun and roll are very similar. As I write pumpkin bun today. Some people use pumpkin bread rolls with the same content. So I suggest this is not gonna be a big deal. you can see my previous recipe about Pumpkin dinner bread rolls here!
This is a very adorable look of a pumpkin bun. It has a simple shape, golden color, and the soft bread is filled with sweet pumpkin fillings. Golden color like golden pumpkin, very attractive!
The Ingredients of Pumpkin Bun
Here are what ingredients we need to make a pumpkin bun
- The dough; Bread Flour and Instant Dry Yeast, These are the main ingredients to make the dough. Pay attention and be careful in use these ingredients because these ingredients determine the result of bread dough.
- The filling and mixture; Pumpkin Puree. I use real pumpkin to make pumpkin puree for both flavor and moisture. You need to bake and mash the pumpkin. You can also use canned pumpkin puree.
- I use warm milk to mixing the flour. Also, it will give off a nice fragrant aroma during the baking process. It also makes the softer texture.
- Butter room temperature; unsalted butter provides the function of flavoring, softening, and expanding bread and reducing the gluten effect of flour, and make the dough structure is moist. The butter also use to wash the pumpkin surface in second batch to make the pumpkin golden brownish color.
- Granulated Sugar and salt. Salt provides aroma and taste, regulates fermentation levels, and gives color to the inside of the bread. Meanwhile, sugar, as we know to providing a sweet taste. in addition, using too much sugar will make the bread texture rough or cramped and the surface burnt.
- Garnish; I use salt for more and garnish and Cinnamon Stick. to make the pumpkin bun look like real pumpkin with its stem. You can replace the cinnamon with pumpkin seeds too. It is optional.
How to Make Pumpkin Bun
First, prepare the pumpkin puree, Pour the balance of pumpkin puree 5 minutes 10 minutes, and cover with food wrap film to avoid dryness on the surface. set aside until not too hot.
In a big bowl prepare warm milk, make sure it is lukewarm, not cold or hot. then, Pour it into a large bowl. Combine instant dry yeast.
next, add bread flour, pumpkin puree, sugar, and salt into the bowl, mix until well combined, then knead with your hand until the dough is smooth and elastic. Press the dough until it comes together like a ball. Stir this well until it is all blended.
for the next step, spread the softened butter and squeeze it into the dough. Squeeze consistently so that the dough absorbs the butter well. knead evenly squeeze into the dough until the dough is not too tacky
Fold the dough until it comes together like a ball. Place this dough in a greased bowl and cover it with cling film or tea towel and prove for 30 minutes or until double the size.
To make sure the dough is good, you can try these tricks. First, poke a hole in the middle, the dough stays and did not deflate. Second, the dough is stretchy and doesn’t break easily.
Preheat oven to 350° F (175° C). Put parchment pepper into a 22 cm x 22 cm rectangular tin.
How to tie use thread for pumpkin bun shape
Once the dough has risen, deflate the dough, then remove the dough from the bowl and, flatten them and divide the dough into 6 equal portions.
- Shape the dough into balls. Using a long thread rope, tie around the dough until it is divided into 8 parts. Make sure the bottom is tightly closed.
- Do not tie the dough too tight as it will continue to rise when you bake it. Gently tie the dough. Before it, you can put the rope to the vegetable oil first so the rope will not cling the dough
- make a note in the end, cut off any excess
- once cold, cut off the knot gently and loosely tighten the dough with strings.
Be careful with this step, also this step takes quite a lot of time, the best result need the best effort, right?😉
Time for baking
After you finish shaping the dough, place the dough into a rectangular tin, then brush milk into the surface of the dough. Some others use egg wash. I use milk to make the pumpkin bun smells good and change the color to golden.
Bake the dough for 20 minutes until the buns are golden brown.
After done baking, do not forget to cut and pull the threads carefully so as not to damage the buns.
Brush a thin layer of butter into the surface of the buns to make them shiny.
Then, use the tip of a chopstick or something similar to make a small hole in the center of the dough. Put the cinnamon stick into the center of the pumpkin bun to make a stem. the cinnamon sticks also add a very nice aroma to the buns.
And now to the best part of it all, take a deep breath, enjoy the delicious aroma of your freshly baked buns
