Why is it called snow onion chicken?
“Snowy onion chicken” is likely named for a dish where chicken is cooked in a sauce or coating that resembles snow, either in color or texture. I assume of course the color, white sauce, and topped with onion. just imagine those snowflakes lol. But, here are a few reasons why it might be called that:
Looks: The dish often has a light-colored sauce or coating that makes the chicken look snowy white. Ingredients like cream, yogurt, coconut milk, or a cornstarch mix can give it a shiny, white texture.
Texture: Sometimes, dishes get their names from how they feel as much as how they look. The chicken might be crispy like snow or have a smooth sauce that feels like snow.
Cultural and Descriptive: Food names often show cultural or sensory details. “Snow onion chicken” might describe how it looks, with onions adding color or texture to the light sauce.
In short, “snow onion chicken” tells you about a dish that’s nice to look at, feels good, and might have a story from where it comes from.

Ingredients of Snow Onion Chicken
Fried Chicken
- Chicken Thigh boneless and skinless; Chicken thighs are chosen for their tenderness and flavor, and they are prepared without bones or skin for ease of cooking and eating.
- Instant Fried Chicken Mixture; You can use a mixture of flour and cornstarch with comparison 3:1. I use the instant one because I need to make the cream onion sauce.
- Salt and Pepper; If you use an instant fried chicken mixture like I did, be careful with the salty taste. Make sure to add just a very little pinch of salt and pepper.
- Water; To make a coating.
Cream Onion Sauce
- Onion; The onion is a key aromatic ingredient for the sauce. It’s likely to be finely chopped or minced to blend into the creamy base.
- Cold Water; to soak or rinse the onion, possibly to reduce its sharpness or pungency before incorporating it into the sauce, and also cold water makes the onion crispy longer and not too soggy
- Mayonnaise and Yoghurt; To create the base creamy white snowy sauce, they add richness and add a little tangy flavor.
- Rice Vinegar or lemon juice; This is a substitution for wine, Rice vinegar or lemon juice adds acidity to balance the creaminess of the sauce and enhance its flavor profile.
- Honey; provides sweetness to the sauce, balancing out the tanginess from the vinegar
How to Make Snow Onion Chicken
First thing first Prepare Chicken. Cut chicken thigh into 3 cm cubes. Combine with salt and pepper, then marinate for 30 minutes.
Secondly, prepare for the snow cream onion sauce!
slice the onion thinly using a mandolin. Soak the sliced onion in cold water to reduce its sharp taste. Rinse the chopped onion with cold water, then drain thoroughly.
Then, in a medium bowl, mix mayonnaise, yogurt, rice vinegar, and honey until well combined. Mix well until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
Adjust seasoning if needed, adding more vinegar or honey to taste.
Back to the Fried Chicken

Next, coat each marinated chicken cube with the dry instant-fried chicken mixture. Then dip it into the prepared wet mixture, and finally coat again with the dry mixture until evenly coated.
Fry the Chicken
Now, Heat oil in a frying pan or deep fryer.
Then, deep fry the coated chicken cubes in batches for about 15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan. Drain the fried chicken on a paper towel-lined plate.
After that, drain the sliced onion from the cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
Assemble and Serve:
First, arrange the fried chicken cubes on a serving plate. Secondly, top the chicken with the drained sliced onion.
