This delicious French classic Croque Monsieur Recipe is one of our all time favorite brunch recipes. It’s a family-friendly, crowd-pleasing. It’s quick and easy to make!

What is Croque Monsieur

Croque Monsieur is a classic French sandwich that consists of ham and cheese, typically Gruyère or Emmental, (I use Emmental here) sandwiched between slices of bread. The sandwich is toasted or grilled until the cheese achieves a melted, bubbly state, and the bread attains a crispy, golden-brown texture. It’s a popular choice for a quick and satisfying meal or snack. Occasionally, the top slice of bread is also generously spread with béchamel sauce before grilling, adding an extra layer of richness to the sandwich.

“Croque Monsieur” translates to “Mister Crunch” or “Crunch Mister” in English. because of grilling crispy sandwich. It’s a classic French dish that’s popular both in France and internationally for its delicious combination of ham, cheese, and bread.

Good croque-monsieurs share a few common traits: they feature a single layer of French ham and Gruyere sandwiched between two thin slices of bread. In some variations, like this one, they’re generously filled and topped with béchamel, elevating the creaminess and overall flavor. The bread gets a buttery brush before hitting the griddle or sliding under a broiler for that perfect golden crunch.

It’s a delightful comfort food, perfect for savoring at any time of day—whether it’s lunch, brunch, a light dinner, or even a satisfying anytime snack. There’s no wrong time to indulge in a Croque Monsieur; it’s a versatile dish that promises deliciousness and comfort whenever the craving strikes.

Yet, while it may be fancy, Croque Monsieur is actually quite easy to make and only requires simple ingredients. It’s the kind of sandwich you can serve to impress your guests or treat yourself to something special without much effort.

Type of Swiss cheese; Guyere and Emmental

Talking about fancy, here are the characteristics of Guyere and Emmental cheese. I use Emmental cheese for the recipe, and it is quite pricey in my country.

Gruyère is a firm and slightly crumbly cheese with a pale yellow color and a nutty, slightly sweet flavor. It’s made from cow’s milk and has a smooth texture that melts beautifully when heated, making it perfect for fondue or gratins.

Emmental, on the other hand, is known for its signature holes or “eyes” and its pale yellow color. It has a mild, slightly nutty flavor and a firm yet elastic texture. Emmental is also made from cow’s milk.
