History of Spaghetti
Spaghetti is one of the most recognized types of pasta throughout the world, and its history has a long trail that is closely linked to Italian culture. The origins of spaghetti can be traced back to ancient Roman times, although the pasta they consumed was different from the one we know today. An early form of pasta was called “lagane” which was ribbons of boiled wheat dough.
Popular story says that Marco Polo brought pasta from China to Italy in the 13th century. However, many culinary historians reject this claim, pointing out that pasta existed in Italy long before Marco Polo’s travels. Archaeological evidence shows that Italians have been eating pasta since the 4th century BC.
Spaghetti, as we know it today, became popular in Southern Italy in the 12th century. With a climate suitable for drying pasta, Naples became a center for dry pasta production. Spaghetti then spread throughout Italy and gained immense popularity.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, waves of Italian immigration brought spaghetti to the United States, where the dish flourished. Spaghetti with tomato sauce became a staple, and over time, numerous variations emerged, cementing spaghetti’s status as one of the world’s most iconic foods.
